Lucidpress

Lucidpress is a wonderful new tool for creating free multimedia collaborative documents.  This reminds me of a bit of Google Doc's and Richard Byrne put it best when he said, " look at Lucidpress as being the best of Apple's Pages and the best of Google Documents combined into one slick service."

The way this works is by creating a document and then having a real-time chat going on to collaborate.  There are other nice features such as commenting and setting permissions on who can and can't view/edit.  Also, this works in a browser so can be used on any device.

BoomWriter Storytelling Camp

Read on to find out about this exciting new innovative Summercamp from BoomWriter...

"This summer, students across New England will have an opportunity to come together online to write, edit and publish their own books inspired by Diary of a Wimpy Kid author and Massachusetts resident Jeff Kinney. Boston public broadcaster WGBH and the digital education company BoomWriter Media have teamed up to launch the BoomWriter Storytellers Camp to help middle school students maintain and improve writing skills during summer vacation. Through the collaboration, WGBH and BoomWriter Media are offering four separate one-week, online, curriculum-based and educator-supported camps that foster creativity and expressive writing."


“We are excited to work in association with WGBH,” said Chris Twyman, co-founder and
CEO of BoomWriter Media. “They are the best of public broadcasting and are in the hearts of
children everywhere. Together, we can inspire a love of writing, storytelling and learning,
while also facilitating critical thought and creativity for a new generation of learners. The BoomWriter platform provides 21 century students with a means of self-expression through writing that is both accessible and familiar and provides teachers with the tools for success.”

The new BoomWriter Storytellers Camp builds on BoomWriter’s existing web-based platform
and provides students with daily lessons and workshops before challenging campers with a
daily writing assignment. On the first day of the camp, participating campers are presented
with a prompt, or ‘story start,’ written by Kinney.

The prompt serves as the first chapter of a collaboratively written novel. After reading the
prompt, campers individually write the next chapter. After writing, teachers and trained
counselors review the campers’ writing and provide interactive feedback. When the daily
writing period ends, campers are given the opportunity to read select and approved
submissions from other campers and vote on their favorite additions to the story. The
submission with the most votes is accepted as the next chapter of the novel and serves as
the next day’s writing prompt.

Draft

Draft is a very cool site that I juts found out about from Larry Ferlazzo's blog.  This site is similar to Google Doc's in that it lets a user create a document and then share it w/ others to collaborate on.  What makes Draft nice is the ability to see the changes highlighted and then deny/accept them before adding them to the document.  Also, a person has the ability to "ask a pro" to get professional writing help on a document for a fee.

BoomWriter News

BoomWriter is proud to announce that the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston are using their cutting edge innovative web-based program to create collaborative stories.  This is being done in conjunction w/ BW's Technology Heroes Program.  The program brings together enthusiastic educators, local celebrities and corporate sponsors to promote literacy and inspire kids to become master storytellers through collaborative writing projects. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston will offer the Technology Heroes Program to members of their Clubs in Boston and Chelsea.

BoomWriter inspires children to bring their stories to life online and in print. The creative process starts with the first part of a story written by a professional writer. Students then are encouraged to write what they think should happen next in the story. After submitting their work online, students read the chapters of their peers and then vote for the most appealing chapter. Once the winning chapter is selected, it is added to the story and the process continues until a book is completed.  Using the generous support of corporate partners, BoomWriter will convert these stories into published books. Each participating club member will receive a free copy and the thrill of their name in print with their peers.

BoomWriter is a wonderful free site for project based learning that is a great way to integrate technology into any 3rd-8th grade curriculum.  This is a site that allows students to collaborative create digital stories by voting on which chapter gets included into the finished story.  Once this process is done the story get then get published and actual book can be ordered.
