BrainRush

BrainRush is one of my favorite new sites for Game Based Learning (GBL).  This is a great resource for educators looking to find educational games on a wide variety of subjects such as: Math, Foreign Language, Social Studies, etc.  Also, a teacher can create their own or customize an existing game to meet their needs.  Best of all the games are ideal for differentiated instruction (and aligned to Common Core Standards) using it's unique engine to adapt to each student's learning.

Answer Pad

Answer Pad is one of the best free (per 1 teacher - 8 groups & 200 students) tools around for mobile devices.  This is a easy to use graphical student response system that helps turns a classroom paperless by allowing for all testing/assessing to be done on mobile devices.  Educators use the web interface to create lessons then push them out to student devices using the free TapIt app.  This allows them to guide learning, differentiate instruction, and assess students in real-time.

Also, there are lots of templates for teachers to browse through and customize to meet their needs.  For example, an educator can download a template of a graph, map, clock, grid etc. and then draw/type/annotate on it to use w/ their students.

Answerables

Answerables is a wonderful new innovative site/game that is perfect for Game Based Learning (or more accurate Game Based Learning meets Learning Management System).  It reminds me of Second Life but geared more toward kids w/ their fantasy/SciFi environment.  The game takes place in the 3D virtual world of Answerables on a planet called Proxima, where the native Ansibles (students) encounter an alien race.

What makes this so great for education that is the safe/COPPA compliant environment that Answerables provides.  This is an ideal place for students to collaborate w/ others and develop their social learning skills.  Answerables provides windows (i.e. Second Life) to view the web, go on quests, etc.  The student dashboard allows students to track their quests, notifications, events, PODS (Personal Online Development Spaces), and more.

Educators can create a lesson/POD (manage permissions), create webquests, internet scave
nger hunts, host live events, and best of all "Gamify" their lesson.  This is great for introducing a new concept, guided/differentiated instruction, and even "Flipping" a classroom.  Also, teachers (parents too) can track/monitor student progress, share and view resources by collaborating w/ other educators, and even setup tutoring courses where they set their own rate.

geddit

geddit is fantastic free learning tool that is ideal for a 1:1 environment where educators can assess student's learning/understanding in real-time.  This is all done through a very easy to use visual interface where students use mobile devices to inform teachers of their understanding in private and real-time.  Through a tap of a button a student can respond to a question or lesson that details their level of understanding on a color coded bar graph.  This makes it easy for educators to quickly glance who is understanding the material being taught and who might need help, making differentiated instruction easy.

The Answer Pad

The Answer Pad is one of my favorite all-in-one mobile learning solutions for a classroom.  Not only does it allow a teacher to become paperless by doing all testing/assessing on a iPad (or mobile device), it can turn a iPad into a student response clicker system.  A educator can use Answer Pad in a number of different ways and push out assignments that they can grade and assess in real-time, which allows them to differentiate instruction, guide instruction, and even flip their classroom.

LessonPaths

I just wanted to share a brief post that MentorMobEDU the excellent site for creating "learning" playlists on the web, has just changed their name to LessonPaths.  Everything else will remain the same.  For those that are unfamiliar w/ MentorMob, this is an excellent site for curating the web into learning playlists that can be used for a number of different teaching styles, such as: guided learning, differentiated instruction, and even flipping a classroom.

Cardkiwi

Cardkiwi is a great site for creating digital flashcards that I just found out about from Free Technology 4 Teachers.  This is a nice site for creating online flashcards that allows users to rate them.  The benefit of this is that Cardwiki then uses a system called "spaced repetition" that differentiates instruction by showing cards that a user needs help w/.  The way this works is a user clicks a thumbs up/down to determine if they know a flashcard.  The cards they need help w/ will appear more often when they are studying.

Geddit

Geddit is a new educational tool that I just found out about from Edshelf.  This is a wonderful site that allows students to use any mobile device to gauge their understanding of any given topic/lesson.  The way this works as a lesson is being given they click/tap a on bar (think bar graph increasing vertically) to show their understanding (i.e., 1 bar - not very - 4 bars - very).  On the the teacher's device they will receive instant real-time feedback and be able to see which students are doing good and which ones are struggling.  This is a great way for teachers to differentiate instruction and adjust their lessons to meet individual needs.

Mystery Math Museum

Mystery Math Museum is the sequel educational iOS app from the hugely popular Mystery Math Town.  This is an excellent follow up to one of my favorite iOS Math apps for Game Based Learning.  As w/ the first game Mystery Math Museum is a big adventure that has students exploring 8 different museums in a eccentric town.  As they explore different museums they will have to solve basic Math problems that focus on skills such as: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  Also, this game allows for multiple accounts which is ideal for schools and has a fantastic parent/teacher section where different skills can be set.  This is ideal for Differentiated Instruction.  Finally, MMM has a very high replay value as there are lots of different objects to find and secrets to unlock to keep students coming back for more.

Math Live

Math Live is an innovative site for teaching Math that I just found out about from Free Technology 4 Teachers.  ML covers 4 basic concepts of Math such as: numbers, patterns and relations, shape and space, and statistics and probability.  The way this works is a student watches an animated video (think BrainPop) and then completes a worksheet to determine if they learned that lesson.  What makes Math Live so great is that a teacher can use it for Differentiated Instruction as students can go at their own place.  Also, there are lots of resources that can be printed out as a PDF such as parents or teacher notes, and a assessment/rubric, not to mention a handy online glossary for students.

I highly recommend checking out Math Live by clicking here!!!

SlideIdea

SlideIdea is a fantastic free iPad app for creating engaging presentations/slideshows.  A user can do this by creating a presentation from scratch through a simple to use widget, or download one of the many free templates.  Where SlideIdea really shines is the ability to interact w/ an audience/students.  This is done by a unique ID code which is generated for each presentation.  All a teacher has to do is share that code (URL) and a student can use any device (laptop, phone, iPad) to interact w/ the presentation.  Some of the ways a educator can interact w/ their students using SlideIdea is to: poll, ask questions, assess, etc etc.  This is ideal for Mobile Learning and Differentiated Instruction.

GoClass

GoClass is a fantastic educational tool (site/app) that allows educators to share their lessons in mobile environment.  Teachers can use the GoClass web interface (site) to manage and create interactive lessons for students and then share them to their mobile devices.  Also, they can create courses, track students, assess, and more.  GoClass uses the formula of Show, Explain, and Ask to teach and reinforce learning.  This is a fantastic way for not only Mobile Learning but for "flipping a classroom" and Differentiated Instruction as well.

Tabtor

Tabtor is an excellent iPad app/program that is ideal for helping educators teach and students learn Math.  This is done through a very easy to use iPad interface that allows students to solve equations by actually writing on the iPad.  What makes Tabtor "work" is that it allows students to view video tutorials before or after a problem to help them learn the "topic".  This is a great way for a teacher to "flip their classroom" and ideal for "differentiated instruction" in that it allows students to learn at their own pace as well as let teachers access student data and adjust their learning to meet their needs.  Another great advantage is that Tabtor uses a variety of teaching styles that helps learners of all different kinds such as wether they are a visual, auditory, or kinetic learner.
