Hideout: Early Reading

Hideout: Early Reading is a wonderful free iOS app for young readers to help them w/ their Reading skills.  This is done through a series of educational activities/games that has students trying to sound out words, find the correct letter, word recognition, and more.  Also, this game features a wide variety of things that engage young learners, such as animations, music, and more.

Kindoma Storytimer

Kindoma Storytime is an interesting iOS app that combines "story time" w/ video chat to allow others to read a digital book together.  This is really good when wanting to read a story w/ another who is not around (i.e. child, student, etc).  The books can be selected by Reading and then are synced together so when a page is turned it does it on both devices.  Another great feature is the ability to point or highlight words so that the other person can see what is going on in real time.  For example, it's a great way to access student comprehension by having them point to items in the book.

Sentence Reading Magic

Sentence Reading Magic is a wonderful free iOS app that I just found out about from Edshelf.  This is a great app for beginning Readers that helps them build sentences as well as work on their Reading skills.  For building sentences a student has to move the words into the correct position and the Reading section has users reading a sentence (2-3 words) and then tapping on a picture to see if they are correct.

BoomWriter

BoomWriter is one of my favorite sites that I've posted about many times before for integrating technology into a classroom.  This innovative site is ideal for grades 3rd-8th for Reading  & Writing.  BoomWriter allows students through a collaborative process create a digital book/story chapter by chapter.

The way this works is a teacher creates a class/students (no student email is required) and then assigns them a story starter (or creates their own).  Each student then types the next chapter.  The students then vote on which chapter should be included in the book/story, and this process goes on and on until the book is completed.  Finally, once this is done their story can then be published and an actual copy of the book can be ordered.  Right now for every first time class they receive 1 free book (shipping included)!!

BoomWriter is ideal for Project Based Learning and excellent for education and abides by CIPA compliance making it a 100% safe in an enclosed environment.

Sight Words & Spelling w/ Pixopop HD

Sight Words & Spelling w/ Pixopop is a free today and an excellent iPad app for teaching young kids how to Read and Spell.  This is done through 3 styles of games: flashcards, word challenge (think hangman), and a basic spelling game.  What makes this great for education is that a teacher can create their own custom words list to use, and students can even select their own avatar.

Sight Word Hangman

Sight Word Hangman is a excellent iOS app for teaching kids Reading, Spelling, and Word Recognition through the use of the game Hangman.  However, SWH is a bit different where a user doesn't guess letters, but listens to the word then selects the correct one.  As they get one wrong pieces of the person generates on the screen.  Best of all a teacher can view all the word lists and even generate a report to see which ones the students got wrong by seeing what they clicked on.

BoomWriter

BoomWriter is one of my all time favorite Web 2.0 sites for education.  This is a fantastic site for Educators grades 3rd-8th (on up) to use w/ their students for Reading and Writing.  With BoomWriter teachers can create student accounts (no student email required - ideal for CIPA/COPPA compliance) and then have their class create a digital story/book.  This is all done through a very easy to use interface and fun competitive process.

The way this works is that students create a story chapter by chapter (they can choose to build a story off a original story starter too) online in BoomWriter's safe environment.  Once a chapter is completed, the students then vote on which chapter should be included in the finished product.  This process goes on and on until the story is completed.  Once a story/book is finished it then gets published online and an actual copy be ordered.  Right now, each new teacher that signs up receives one free class copy!!!

For more info click here!!!

However, BoomWriter also offers a "Technology Heroes Program" which is a great way to incorporate technology into the curriculum.  This program allows every educator and student who participate to receive a free published copy of their story/book (no shipping charges).

BoomWriter News

BoomWriter is proud to announce that the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston are using their cutting edge innovative web-based program to create collaborative stories.  This is being done in conjunction w/ BW's Technology Heroes Program.  The program brings together enthusiastic educators, local celebrities and corporate sponsors to promote literacy and inspire kids to become master storytellers through collaborative writing projects. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston will offer the Technology Heroes Program to members of their Clubs in Boston and Chelsea.

BoomWriter inspires children to bring their stories to life online and in print. The creative process starts with the first part of a story written by a professional writer. Students then are encouraged to write what they think should happen next in the story. After submitting their work online, students read the chapters of their peers and then vote for the most appealing chapter. Once the winning chapter is selected, it is added to the story and the process continues until a book is completed.  Using the generous support of corporate partners, BoomWriter will convert these stories into published books. Each participating club member will receive a free copy and the thrill of their name in print with their peers.
